In response to the “Blood Moon” interest and Christians watching the heavens during our Lord’s Passover, it was essentially poo poo’d on by an Associate Professor of New Testament by the name of Ben Merkle. He works at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He stated in a prolific Christian weekly publication last month, “The wise course of action is NOT to speculate about various “signs of the times,” but rather to keep your spiritual house in order and give strong emphasis to Jesus’ pronouncement that ‘about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” This partial scripture he quoted is the “staple quote” that unknowingly unbelieving Christians (that is, they do not know they are unbelieving) use to make their case for their secret unbelief and to impose it on those who do believe the bible and what it says. Ever heard the cliche “Misery likes company”? You might be tempted to say, “Who do you think you are? After all, this man is an associate professor at a Theological Seminary!” My answer? I am just the kind of person that is bold enough to say something when it is completely asinine. I hope to explain here why this is the case.
As rightly mentioned by this professor – Jesus clearly does say we will not know the day or the hour. It is a mystery. I suppose Satan would benefit greatly had he had that information. Most students of bible prophecy understand that this is a mystery that God intended not to reveal. Yet He does give the church, through the Word and the Holy Spirit some level of understanding concerning the season of time in which He will come. He gave a little revelation to each of the prophets, some of the psalmists and to the apostles (not to mention, Jesus, himself). There will always be those of course that try to predict THE day and THE hour which always gives the rest of us expectant believers a black eye. As a bible prophecy student, I understand that when predictions like these are made then it will not, therefore, be THAT day. Make sense? Because I believe what the scripture says, “no man will know the day or the hour.” But just because I disregard predictions of THE day or THE hour, it doesn’t excuse me in disregarding the other prophetic signs of the nearness of His coming and our promised redemption to follow.
